How to Prepare Your Home for Upholstery Cleaning

A quick checklist before your upholstery cleaning visit.

November 12, 2025 4 min readBy Michael Recek

When I show up to clean a couch or sectional, the first ten minutes usually decide how the whole job goes. A little prep on your end means I spend my time actually cleaning the fabric instead of moving lamps and digging coins out of the cushions.

I'm Michael Recek, the owner of SurfaceTech Cleaning here in Fresno. I do the work myself, so this is exactly what I'd tell you if you called and asked how to get ready. None of it is complicated, and most of it takes fifteen minutes.

Clear the area around the furniture

Give me room to work around all four sides of the piece. I bring a hot-water extraction wand and a hose, and I need to reach the back and sides, not just the front. Move coffee tables, floor lamps, side tables, and any plants or décor a few feet away.

If the couch sits against a wall, I'll usually pull it out a little so I can clean the back panel and reach underneath. You don't have to do that part, but clearing the small stuff nearby makes it quick.

Takeaway: Aim for about three feet of clear space on every side you want cleaned.

Empty cushions and check for items

Pull off the seat and back cushions if they come off, and run your hand down into the crevices. I find pens, coins, hair clips, dog toys, and the occasional remote on almost every job. Anything left behind can get wet or snag the wand.

While the cushions are off, point out which ones get the most use. The seat you sit in every night is going to look different from the guest end of the sectional, and knowing that helps me set expectations honestly before I start.

Takeaway: Empty the cushion pockets and set aside anything you don't want cleaned or wet.

Do a light vacuum and skip the store-bought sprays

A quick vacuum to pull off loose crumbs, pet hair, and surface dust helps a lot. My extraction process handles the deep soil, but loose debris just turns to mud when it gets wet, so getting it off first gives a cleaner result.

One thing I'd ask: don't dump grocery-store stain spray on a spot right before I come. Some of those products leave a residue or set a stain, and a few can react with cleaning solution. If you've already used one, just tell me what it was. For homes with pets, our pet odor and stain removal approach treats the fabric and the padding underneath, not just the surface.

Takeaway: Vacuum lightly, leave tough spots alone, and tell me about any products already used.

Plan for pets, kids, and drying time

My cleaning is family- and pet-conscious, but the work itself is easier when the dog isn't supervising. If you can keep pets and small kids in another room while I run hoses and equipment, it's safer for everyone and faster for me.

Upholstery stays damp for a while after hot-water extraction, often several hours depending on the fabric, the weather, and airflow. Plan not to sit on it until it's dry, and if you can run a ceiling fan or open a window, it speeds things up. Central Valley summers actually help here since the dry Fresno and Clovis air pulls moisture out quickly.

Takeaway: Keep pets and kids clear during the visit and leave the piece untouched until it's fully dry.

Point out problem spots and ask questions up front

Before I start, walk me through the trouble areas. Show me the wine spot, the spot where the cat got sick, the worn armrest. I'd rather know going in than discover it halfway through. I'll tell you honestly what I think will come out and what might not, because some stains and some fabrics just don't fully release.

If you're also thinking about your floors while I'm out, it can make sense to combine the visit. A lot of folks book upholstery alongside carpet cleaning or area rug cleaning in the same trip. You can see the full list on our upholstery cleaning page or reach me directly at (216) 483-2200.

Takeaway: Flag every stain before I begin so we're on the same page about realistic results.

Frequently Asked Questions

It varies by fabric, how soiled it was, and airflow in the room, but expect it to stay damp for several hours and sometimes longer. Running a fan, opening a window, or just the dry Central Valley air all help. I'll give you a realistic estimate for your specific piece before I leave.

For everyday dust and crumbs, a light vacuum is plenty. I'd avoid dumping store-bought stain spray on spots right beforehand, since some products leave residue or can set a stain. If you've already used something, just tell me what it was so I can adjust.

I work with most common fabrics and check the manufacturer tag when there is one. Some materials, like certain delicate or older fabrics, need a gentler approach, and a few stains won't fully release no matter the method. I'll look at your piece and tell you honestly what to expect before starting.
